Another historic first for Heart Center

A team of experts led by congenital heart surgeon Dr. Iki Adachi became the first in the United States to implant a ventricular assist device specifically designed for small children.

Honoring a legacy

On May 31, 2019, Texas Children’s officially blessed and dedicated Lester and Sue Smith Legacy Tower, which is named in memory of the late Houston philanthropist Lester Smith and his wife Sue.

Highest level of care

In the summer of 2019, Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women was designated a level IV maternal care facility, which certifies that we offer the highest level of care for pregnant and postpartum patients with conditions that range from low-risk to the most complex.

Five-year milestone celebrated

In March of 2019, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus celebrated its 5th anniversary. The unit marked the milestone without having any hospital-acquired infections, a significant achievement for the unit’s staff and a huge win for the patients treated there.

Offering specialized care

Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women opened a stand-alone OB-GYN intensive care unit in 2019, offering a specialized, private space for high-risk expectant and postpartum mothers with varying conditions.

Therapy Dog Program expands

Texas Children’s Hospital welcomed two new animal-assisted therapy dogs in 2019. Cohen is enhancing the experience of patients, families and staff at one of Texas Children’s community hospitals while Pluto focuses on outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Medical Center campus.

Texas Children’s received the 2019 Sepsis Heroes Award for several notable successes including developing an algorithm to improve the timely diagnosis of sepsis.
