Early in his career, Texas Children’s President and CEO Mark A. Wallace was asked for his personal definition of leadership during a presentation. In that moment, Mr. Wallace came up with a very extemporaneous version of his definition, later realizing that defining leadership would be key to his success.
Determined to craft an answer that was true to himself and his vision of what he wanted to create, Mr. Wallace spent the next year researching and refining not only his personal definition of leadership, but the foundation of what is now Mr. Wallace’s 10 Leadership Maxims.
These maxims were developed over the course of Mr. Wallace’s career at Texas Children’s and represents his leadership philosophy. Covering a variety of leadership topics, the maxims guide Mr. Wallace daily and have become the core of the culture at Texas Children’s.
Nearly every day at Texas Children’s, Mr. Wallace’s maxims are brought to life by employees who embrace leadership boldly and deliberately.
These employees, whether leaders by formal title or not, seek and find ways to make Texas Children’s better every day. They take personal accountability for making sure patients and their families have the best possible care, as well as an exceptional experience. When they see a problem, they come to the table with a thoughtful solution. And in many moments of innovation, employees often come to the table with an idea that counters a challenge before it even happens.
These employees are the leaders who have made Texas Children’s successful for decades. They are the reason why Texas Children’s has and will continue to thrive and find ways to provide the high quality care our patients need, when and where they need it for decades to come.
